Where to stop with kids between Montreal and Toronto – Fort Henry

Right after Prehistoric World we visited another interesting place on our car trip to The Bruce Peninsula – Fort Henry.

This time we moved not too far in the past. We traveled to 1832 of the Canadian history.

Fort Henry was constructed for the War of 1812, then later demolished and rebuilt from 1832 to 1837. It stands on the highest point in Kingston, overlooking Wolfe Island and the St. Lawrence River.

Fort Henry stood as a defense but never saw battle, and was later used as an important gunnery school. It represents Canada’s largest fortification west of Quebec City.

The fort is open for visitors and has around 100 employees, 85 out of them are students. There is an interesting program through out the day and it is different from day to day.

The main activity of the fort is a guided tour, but we skipped it and walked around on our pace. I don’t think Maxim would have a patience for the organized tour.

One of the main attraction of every fort, and Fort Henry is not an exception, are cannons.

Officers tended to come from the upper classes of British society. In the Infantry, ranks could be purchased up to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Promotion of the officers in the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers happened according to seniority.

You can participate in “Fort Fright” event. Scare yourself, your family and friends as nightmares come to life throughout fort’s ditches and tunnels. Remember to breath 🙂

When we were leaving we purchased very tasty, baked in the fire oven, cinnamon pie. It was the best treat at the end of this very intense day.
