Chasing winter in Mont Orford
March in Canada does not look very attractive – especially in megacities. The real winter seems to be over, but it’s still pretty far away from spring weather. Even if we have quite warm days. One of the ways to boost your mood and sneak away from the grey routine in the off-season time is to go there where the colors are still bright. So we decided to try to catch the winter in the woods 🙂 Though a few days before our arrival the temperature there, in Parc national du Mont-Orford, was + 17C. So, we were not sure that our plan to hike Mont Chauve is a good idea )))
Location
Mont Orford is 125 km from Montreal which is about 1,5 h of driving. We booked a cabin and it turned out that we’d stayed there in the summer. Okay, will try it in winter )))
Cabin McKelvey
The cabin has all the amenities: heat, light, water, shower.
Hike to Mont Chauve
Truth be told, a hike to Mont Chauve in Mont Orford is not an easy hike: additional km to initially declared 11 ones, sinking in the snow, pretty steep last part ….
The path was complicated by the fact that, temporarily, for the period of the cross-country skiing season, additional kilometers were added to bypass the ski tracks and protect them. And it turned out that we were the first ones to hike these additional kilometers in the last days of rain and snow, practically groping for the path by poking the trail 🙂 We even began to doubt whether we would be able to make it … But we made it!
Lake
On the way back we all were pretty tired. And when we noticed a lake, we decided to make a stop to have a rest and finish our tea: the summit was quite windy, so we didn’t stay long there.
Relax in the evening
Difficult but satisfying hike. We like such feelings ))) What is also important: after the hike, which at the end turned to be not 11, but 14 km, we did not go straight home, but were able to rest and spend one more night in a cabin.
The more you tired on the trail the more you appreciate a peaceful evening by the campfire at the end of the day ❤️.
And BTW, we did catch up with winter 🙂
