Hiking in Fjord-du-Saguenay

Hike De la Statue trail in Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park

From the big variety of trails in Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park we found one which is not too difficult for the kid to hike, but still challenging enough. And this trail offers breathtaking views on Saguenay River. So, after some considerations we decided to hike “De la Statue” trail.

Location

Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park is located between Tadoussac and Saguenay on the south shore of Saguenay River. It has three sectors – Baie-Éternité, Baie-Sainte-Marguerite and Baie-de-Tadoussac sectors. Baie-Éternité is the one we entered, faces the Eternity Bay surrounded by massive rocky mountains.

The original plan was to make only half of the trail till “Halte Bellevue”. But perfect weather and approval to continue from the youngest hiker changed our mind. And eventually, we completed the full trail, which gave us a lot of satisfaction.

The hike starts few hundred meters from the visitor’s center. Then it goes straight up with the few viewpoints and stops.

Eventually, the trail flattens and you may decide to turn back. Because this part already could be considered a good hike. But, if you decide to continue, the trail will take you walking among the trees without any views for some time.

On the way, you will reach a cabin, which could be used as a shelter in bad weather.

From this cabin, the trail goes always down the hill. And it transforms into well-maintained stairs. Already from the stairs, the views to the Saguenay River are opened in front of those who could reach that far.

History

The trail brings you to the Notre-Dame du Saguenay Statue. This 7.5 meters statue stands on 180 meters height above the river.

This statue was commissioned by Charles-Napoleon Robitaille in September 1880. When the salesman was attempting to cross the Saguenay River in winter, the ice cracked and the man fell into the icy water. Fortunately, he was miraculously saved and quickly recovered. The rescue he connected with the intercession of Virgin and decided to devote her a monument.
