Where to hike with kid near Montreal – Mont Chauve in Orford National Park.

We always look for the new places where to hike with our kid near Montreal. I usually start by browsing the google map for the ideas.

For our last hiking of 2017 we decided to climb Mont Chauve in Orford National Park. Our first attempt failed in the late fall of 2016. Then we returned before reaching the summit.

Location.

The trail Sentier du Ruisseau-David starts from the parking of the Parc municipal de l’Érablière. Around 50 meters from the parking you can find the entrance to the National Park where you leave the entry fees.

Family hike

This time we were surprised to find the trail covered with the first snow and ice. Ideally we would like to have microspikes in such conditions, but we managed to hike safe without them.

The hike was not very easy for Maxim, nevertheless he made it. The key lessons we’ve learned when we hike with kids are:

  • Try to find a game which could entertain them on the go. Like, who first find the trail marker, or come up with the song based on what you see, etc.
  • Make as many stops as your child need. Don’t force.
  • Have enough snacks and water.
  • Be prepared turn back.
  • Have first aid.
  • Hide some gift from elf/dwarf/<name the creature> on the summit. This is a special reward which helps a lot.
