Way of looking at things

Who said that winter has to be tough and all winter magic gone as Christmas is over?
I know some people do suffer in winter and really unhappy with cold and darkness. But going outside is one of the ways to beat winter blues, to get your portion of daylight and serotonin. Round Top and Lake Spruce Loop in Sutton is one of the places where you can hike and fall in love with winter.
Winter in Canada is long enough to try different activities. It could be skiing, skating, hiking, snow tubing, and even hot tubing 😉

Location

Anyone willing to brave cold weather will be rewarded by the amazing views that nature puts on. And we were lucky to get into one more winter beautiful fairy tale. That time in Sutton, hiking Round Top and Lake Spruce Loop. From Montreal, it is about 120 km which is 1,5 hours of driving.

Round Top trail

It is already one year since the pandemic has been announced and the restrictions put on. But we learned to live with that. So we booked the hiking time slot for the second half of the day and arrived directly at the trailhead. As usual, we put our microspikes on, took our trekking poles and backpacks, and headed off on a new adventure.

The trail is moderately difficult, 7 km, and took us 4 hours.

It could be hiked in less than 4 hours but we spent a lot of time just watching and enjoying all the winter beauty this path shared with us.

From the summit, you see beautiful mountains covered with snow: some more, some less.

Don’t miss another point of view on the other side, just 2 minutes from the summit on your way back.

And I would spend even more but as we started afternoon and daylight still not so long as in summertime, we didn’t have plenty of time. Also though we had our warmers in mittens and boots, the cold was pretty sensitive so better keep moving )))

The descent, as usual, shouldn’t be underestimated. There are some pretty slippery spots you need to be very careful with. And one more prove that microspikes are “must-have” things for any winter hike. Always carry them with you in your backpack even you think the trail shouldn’t be steep or difficult.

Après-Hike Cabin

A plan to hike this trail and spend a few nights in this area has been made far enough in advance so we were able to book this beautiful place on Valentine’s Day. As we already tried a rustic cabin with no water and electricity, that time we decided to treat ourselves a bit differently.

Cabin

There is a good expression Après-Ski that means “the social activities and entertainment following a day’s skiing” according to Google )))

So, we had rented a luxury cabin with its own spa on the balcony to relax after a cold hike and celebrate Valentine’s Day.

No matter how cold is outside, always bring your own warmth 😉
